NGC 2979 is a dwarf galaxy classified as Irr
and sometimes as Sc/P.  NGC 2976 is a member of the M 81 group and is still
connected to
M 81 by a trail of dust and gas.
Boyce, et. al.. (2001) suggest that it may be
a recent galaxy formed from the tidal debris in which it is embedded.
